Is's frequent use was a point of contention when the book was up for an award but the board of judges did not want to recommend it due to the words constant use. One (black)judge refered to it as a "Nigga Book". I thought that was funny.<br /><br />The comment at nykitten...It IS sad that we as black people are so quick to identify with the negative in the world and are forced (in some cases) to hide or downplay the positives. We are so used to oppression that it has become a reality that does in fact make me feel awful for it's routine nature.<br /><br />"Try harder and don't settle" was a mantra from Booker T Washington to the graduating classes of Tuskegee imploring them to do more than they thought they could do and receive more than they may think they deserved.<br /><br />"The guy in the bushes" is a play on the fact that anonymity and omnipresence are often synonymous. All those sexually explicit books have you conditioned to expect base behavior in every aspect of life.<br /><br />As for American Gangster, I saw it. It was wack. I liked Goodfellas better. Had more character development.<br /><br />And finally...homey...dish something of substance before you think I can't take it. You tried to wage a "War of Wit" and are clearly unarmed.
